Education in Legal Medicine, Inc. Opens New Office in San Francisco, California
New customers and growing demand for online curriculum brings expansion in the west

Rockville, MD – November 30, 2004 - Education in Legal Medicine (ELM ), the leading provider of Internet-based risk management education for the healthcare industry, today announced their expansion to the West Coast with a new office opening in San Francisco, California.

The new office will provide expanded support for existing ELM clients, as well as provide more dedicated marketing, sales and customer support capabilities across the country.

San Francisco is ELM's third office and its first on the West Coast. With two more locations in New York City and Washington , DC , ELM stands poised for rapid expansion.

“2004 has been an outstanding year for ELM and our clients. Both our course offering and client roster has expanded significantly,” said Shara Cohen, VP of Operations. “Our top priority has always been to provide dedicated service and attention to each of our clients whether through course customization or program management of exciting new projects. Establishing a West Coast presence enables us to maintain the level of attention our customers have come to expect, while allowing us to meet the ever increasing demands for high-quality, cost-effective medico-legal education.”

The effects of medical malpractice crisis are widespread and nationally recognized. For the federal government, the direct costs of medical liability coverage and the indirect costs of defensive medicine can add up to as much as $47.5 billion each and every year. But, they are particularly staggering in some western states like Washington , Oregon , and Texas , which the American Hospital Association has identified as states in “crisis”. Opening this office will allow ELM to service and assist clients in the West proactively address risk in their organizations.

ELM curriculum covers a wide range of critical CME to raise physician awareness of risk in their clinical practice, allowing them to practice medicine with more confidence in a manner not requiring time away from their practices sitting in a conference room or seminar.

ELM's westward expansion will be led by Alex Burgess, a seasoned executive with experience in both the healthcare and software industries.

“I am excited to be a part of ELM and the efforts they are making to revolutionize medico-legal education in the United States ,” said Mr. Burgess. “ELM brings value to the medical community and the public at large by enabling clinicians to provide better patient care without the fear associated with medical malpractice. I have known Dr. Fiscina for many years, and I am excited for the opportunity to share his work with the risk management community in the West.”

The ELM curriculum is case based and uses real-life clinical situations to address fundamental legal principles as well as specialty specific concerns. ELM courses offer substantive content, progress testing, targeted feedback, and real-time reporting to raise the level of education for physicians and healthcare professionals as well as document risk management and patient safety efforts for healthcare organizations. ELM's courses, and their online delivery, have been developed to meet the specific needs of both program administrators and the health care provider.

ELM currently works with top medical facilities in the country, including New York Presbyterian, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center .
