Problem-based skill development exercises in this course will train healthcare providers to apply legal principles to clinical situations by explaining the legal consequences of clinical choices.

The course will ask participants to assess the reasonableness of a healthcare provider's conduct in varying clinical situations, to reach a conclusion as to whether the healthcare provider in the case was responsible for the patient's injury, and to provide a rationale. Knowing the salient legal points that will be applied to a healthcare provider's conduct permits a healthcare provider to make more assured choices whenever medicolegal questions arise in a clinical context.

The educational goals and objectives are designed to enable a healthcare provider to define the required standards of care, recognize patterns of legal risk in clinical situations, and assist the healthcare provider in making legally sound choices.
