The ELM Curriculum explores the interaction between the law and
medicine by illustrating the legal issues and principles involved
in real, clinical situations. Case studies portray specific clinical
events, not to teach physicians the specific law, but to teach them
to assess the legal acceptability of their professional conduct.
The course asks the participant to assess the reasonableness of
a physician's conduct in varying situations, to evaluate the physician's
liability for a patient's injury, and to provide a rationale. Knowing
the salient legal points that will be applied to the retrospective
examination of a physician's conduct enables a physician to make
more assured choices whenever medico-legal questions arise in a
clinical context.
